Surajkund Mela Ride Accident Sparks Political Row; Two Arrested
A tragic accident at the Surajkund International Mela in Haryana’s Faridabad district has triggered both administrative action and political controversy, following the collapse of an amusement ride that left several people injured and claimed lives.
Police have arrested Mohammad Shakir, owner of the ride-operating firm Himachal Fun Care, and his associate Nitesh in connection with the incident. An FIR has been registered under multiple sections, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
Minister’s Remark Draws Criticism
While expressing condolences, Haryana Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma stated that the accident occurred due to “God’s will” and claimed that the rides were in proper condition. He added that regular inspections were conducted and certification procedures had been completed on the day of the incident. The remark quickly became controversial, drawing sharp criticism from opposition leaders.
AAP Targets State Government
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) strongly objected to the minister’s statement. Party leader Anurag Dhanda questioned why responsibility was being placed solely on the vendor if official fitness certificates were issued. He alleged that the state government was attempting to shield senior officials and demanded an impartial investigation into administrative lapses.
Special Investigation Team Formed
Following directives from Haryana Director General of Police Ajay Singhal, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the incident. The team is conducting a detailed technical and scientific examination of the ride failure and is also investigating the role of other individuals and officials connected to the safety clearance process.
Injured Receiving Treatment, Families Assured Support
A total of 12 people were injured in the incident, including police personnel deployed at the event. Senior police officials visited the hospital and met with the families of the victims, assuring them of financial assistance and compassionate employment where applicable.
Safety Measures Under Scrutiny
The Surajkund Mela, one of Haryana’s most prominent cultural events, is now under intense scrutiny over safety protocols and inspection mechanisms. Authorities have stated that strict action will be taken against all those found responsible once the investigation is completed.
